However, investigation has shown that Henson had set his sights on attacking Scientology years prior to this. On June 14, 1988 Henson paid for a membership in the Cult Awareness Network (CAN), an organization which spread scurrilous allegations about new religious movements and acted as a referral house for deprogrammers. CAN declared bankruptcy after a $1.8 million judgment against them for their participation in the kidnapping and attempted deprogramming of a member of the Pentecostal faith.
